About Dr. Steven Anderson

Preaching on Daniel 10

I am a career Bible scholar, teacher, and author, with three seminary degrees. My Ph.D. is from Dallas Theological Seminary. My current projects include:

  1. I published an 8-volume Interpretive Guide to the Bible in 2014. The first three volumes have been revised and translated into Spanish. I plan to do a revision of the final five volumes and publish Spanish translations for all of the volumes.
  2. I am writing what I believe is a groundbreaking commentary on the book of Revelation. See this information sheet and these draft chapters: Introduction, 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, Excursus on Babylon the Great, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22.
  3. I am involved in church ministry; my preaching and teaching is now mostly in Spanish.
  4. As time allows, I write new blog posts and also respond to comments and update previously published articles. My most popular blog articles are:
  5. I am working with a team of scholars to create the Photo Companion to the Bible for BiblePlaces.com; this is a project that I began with Todd Bolen in 2014.
  6. I am conducting continuing research on Darius the Mede, who was the subject of my PhD dissertation (Dallas Theological Seminary, 2014).
  7. I do volunteer work for Bibles International and teach Bible and biblical language courses as an adjunct professor when I am able. Places where I have taught in the past include Capital Bible Seminary, Jordan Evangelical Theological Seminary, Seminario Teológico Evangélico Gozo Eterno, and Washington Bible College.
  8. I do freelance editing of books, dissertations, and articles in the area of biblical studies.

My undergraduate degree is in Political Science, and my sister works in the news business, which gives me an interest in current events and their relation to the Bible.

My aim in this blog is to share insights from my studies, as well as to try to give a biblical Christian perspective on current events.

I am reading your book Darius the Mede: A Reappraisal
Since the historian differ in existent of Darius and some mention him the others not it seems to me Darius is actually a title of the Mede’s king not the name therefore some used his title instead of the king’s name.
I would like to know who are the Medes today in Iran are they the Kurd?
    Thanks
    Azad Karim

    • Hi Azad,

There has been a lot of intermixing of peoples in Iran during the 2,500 years since the Medes ruled an empire, so I don’t think that any particular modern ethnic group can be identified with the ancient Medes. Probably many Medes were assimilated by the Persians during the Achaemenid period, and probably many people in the area of northwestern Iran have some Median ancestry. The question of whether the Kurds are the Medes is particularly difficult, since it is connected to Kurdish nationalism and the question of Kurdish statehood. Personally, I think that the question of whether the Kurds should have their own state is best separated from the question of whether they are the Medes. I’m not an expert on Iranian languages, but from what I have read most experts think that the language the Kurds speak is not derived from the ancient Median language, although it is in the same language family. Probably there were a number of ancient people groups that were assimilated into the people who are known today as the Kurds.

  6. Hi Dr Steven,

Sincerely, I thought you were (the other) Steven Anderson (the “if-i-could-push-a-button-kill-every-gay-person-id-press-it-over-and-over-again” pastor)! I was honestly scared because your work seemed so well done. Good thing you’re not him!

    Blessings

    Hi Dr Steve,

I also started thinking in the line of the USA being the Babylon of Revelation, not only during the time of Biden, but also now during the time of Trump. He is certainly now infuriating Europe with his tariff war, and his public praising of Putin also spells out his potential future turning on Israel. Your thoughts?

    Regards,

    Dr Hennie Mouton

    • Dr. Hennie,

Yes, there are many things happening right now that align with biblical prophecy. While I believe the stage is being set, I also believe that events will take some time to play out before the rapture happens and the tribulation period begins.

Yes, Trump is turning against Europe, which will result in Europe turning against the United States. Trump is showing signs of friendliness toward Russia, which will enable Russia to expand—not just to the former USSR, but also into Africa, which Trump views as a continent of little worth. In Asia, Trump is seeking to strengthen India and weaken China, which will lead to an alliance of “kings of the east” (Rev 16:12), rather than a single eastern superpower. While Trump is showing hostility and contempt toward many allies, he is seeking to strengthen the bond between the United States and Israel, which I believe will lead to a comprehensive peace deal in the Middle East. I think Israel will also have some involvement in the global digital currency launched by the United States, either as a cosponsor or as a backup admin. The false prophet, who will be the leader of Israel when the tribulation period begins, will use this system to impose the mark of the beast following the destruction of Babylon the Great by the antichrist.

Many people have asked me about Trump and the antichrist. You mentioned the idea that Trump could turn on Israel in the future. The antichrist appears to be a great friend of Israel, but when the Jews repudiate him he turns against them viciously and seeks to wipe them out. While one could imagine a similar thing happening with Trump, I don’t believe that it will—I believe Israel will be secure in its land until the midpoint of the tribulation period. As for the identification of Trump with the antichrist, I understand the parallels that can be drawn (e.g., the demand for personal loyalty, the self-exaltation, and the disregard for laws and treaties), but Trump is not the man who will fulfill the role of the actual antichrist in history. Here are my reasons:
      1. Trump is the leader of Babylon the Great, whereas the antichrist rules over a different realm that will destroy Babylon the Great (Rev 17:16-17).
      2. The timeframe is wrong: while we are living near in time to the return of Christ, there are still many events that must take place in order to prepare the world for the tribulation period. See this post.
      3. While both Trump and the antichrist seek dictatorial power, the antichrist specifically puts down three of the ten “kings” who are the rulers of his realm (Dan 7:7-8, 20, 24). The United States has fifty states, not ten. The ten rulers are identified in Daniel 2 and 7 as the end-time form of the Roman Empire, so they must be a latter-day form of the European Union (not the United States).
      4. The antichrist will direct Europe to spend huge sums of money on a vast military buildup (Dan 11:38). Trump is seeking significant cuts to military spending.
      5. Daniel 9:26 more specifically identifies the Romans who destroyed Jerusalem as the future antichrist’s people, so the antichrist must be Italian.
      6. The antichrist will only acknowledge himself as god, and will not give lip service to the Christian God (Dan 11:37).

I plan to post an article on my blog later this year about the antichrist, in which I will go into more detail about biblical data regarding the antichrist, and the similarities and dissimilarities with Donald Trump.

For those who aren’t familiar with the context of your comment, in January I published four blog posts on the relationship of prophecy to current events. The subjects are Israel, Gog and Magog, Babylon the Great, and technology.

      Yours in Christ,

      Steven D. Anderson

Thanks dr Steven, but it wasn’t my thinking that Trump is the Antichrist. I anyway agree with you on this – he’s not the Antichrist.

  9. Hi. My name is Keith Strom. Forgive me for not getting all excited about not knowing the exact chronology of the last days because however I believe with my mistakes, it will happen correctly anyway! But, I would like to see one anyway, a chronological list of scriptures in the order of the end days. I suppose there is already one out there already. God Bless you and all your work for the LORD.

    • Hi Keith,
I have not personally made a list of Bible prophecies in chronological order. There would be some challenges in making the list, as some events are not punctiliar, but happen over a period of time. Thus, there is sometimes overlap between events. Also, there are many prophecies of the millennium which describe the 1,000 years in general terms. It is more feasible to make a chronological list of end time events, and to note Bible passages which describe each of those events. Perhaps someday I will publish a list like this. However, the easiest thing to do is to follow the narrative of the book of Revelation, or the sequence of Daniel’s prophecies (within each of his visions). The book of Revelation follows a general chronological order, and so does each one of Daniel’s visions.
