Have you ever had a time in your life (or maybe many times) when it seemed like God was letting a disaster happen to you? Many years ago, there was a faithful, godly newlywed couple for whom everything seemed to be going wrong, in spite of their faithfulness to God. They lived in poverty, in a rough, blue collar town, and were despised by the elite people in their society. Then, when the wife was expecting to give birth to their first child, the couple received an order from the government to immediately make a difficult journey to a faraway town in order to pay a tax.

When the couple arrived at their destination, the wife began to have birth pangs, but none of the relatives with whom they were staying was willing vacate a bedroom for the young woman to give birth. She was sent to a downstairs room where the animals were kept, or possibly the couple made an arrangement with some farmer to rent a cave or barn. When the woman gave birth, she laid her baby down to sleep in a feeding trough, next to the animals. But that was just the beginning of this baby boy’s rough start to life: soon after his birth, the family would be forced to flee for their lives to another country when a government official gave an order to kill their baby out of pure spite; later, after six more children had been added to the family, the husband would die unexpectedly, leaving the firstborn son responsible to provide for the needs of the large family. This son, in spite of being faithful to God, would die in his mid-thirties after a life of suffering and rejection.

Where was God while all of this was happening? Didn’t He care about this faithful couple and their faithful boy? Why did they have so many financial problems, and so much persecution from enemies in government and society? Why didn’t God give them a comfortable life in the end as a reward for their faithfulness?

Where was God? As we read the Christmas story in Luke 2, we find that God was there all along. In fact, He was physically present. This was the way that God chose to send His own beloved Son into the world, and this was the difficult life that God the Father chose for His Son to live. What a perspective adjuster! When times are tough and it seems like everything is going wrong, we ought to remember Jesus, and to reflect on the truth that sometimes tough times come as a result of God’s love for us. What we think is best for us may be completely the opposite of what God knows is best for us. But no matter what happens in this life, if we are born again children of God, God will always be with us.

¿Alguna vez has tenido un momento en tu vida (o quizás muchas veces) en el que parecía que Dios estaba dejando que te sucediera un desastre? Hace muchos años, hubo una pareja de recién casados fieles y piadosos para quienes todo parecía ir mal, a pesar de su fidelidad a Dios. Vivian en pobreza en un pueblo agreste y habitado por la clase trabajadora, y eran despreciados por la élite de su sociedad. Luego, cuando la esposa esperaba dar a luz a su primer hijo, la pareja recibió una orden del gobierno de emprender inmediatamente un viaje difícil a una ciudad lejana para pagar un impuesto.

Cuando la pareja llegó a su destino, la esposa empezó a tener dolores de parto, pero ninguno de los parientes con los que se alojaban estuvo dispuesto a desocupar una habitación para que la joven diera a luz. La enviaron a una habitación en la planta baja donde se mantenía a los animales, o posiblemente la pareja hizo un acuerdo con algún granjero para alquilar una cueva o granero. Cuando la mujer dio a luz, puso a su bebé a dormir en un comedero, al lado de los animales. Pero ese fue solo el comienzo de la dura vida de este niño: poco después de su nacimiento, la familia se vería obligada a huir a otro país para salvar sus vidas cuando un funcionario del gobierno dio la orden de matar a su bebé por puro resentimiento; más tarde, después de que se hubieran añadido seis hijos más a la familia, el esposo moriría inesperadamente, dejando al primogénito la responsabilidad de atender las necesidades de la numerosa familia. Este hijo, a pesar de ser fiel a Dios, moriría a los treinta y tantos años tras una vida de sufrimiento y rechazo.

¿Dónde estaba Dios mientras todo esto sucedía? ¿No se preocupaba por esta fiel pareja y su fiel hijo? ¿Por qué tuvieron tantos problemas financieros y sufrieron tanta persecución por parte de los enemigos en el gobierno y la sociedad? ¿Por qué Dios no les dio una vida cómoda al final como recompensa por su fidelidad?

¿Dónde estaba Dios? Al leer la historia de la Navidad en Lucas 2, descubrimos que Dios estuvo allí todo el tiempo. De hecho, Él estuvo físicamente presente. Esta fue la manera que Dios eligió para enviar a Su propio Hijo amado al mundo, y esta fue la vida difícil que Dios Padre eligió para que Su Hijo viviera. Cuando los tiempos son difíciles y parece que todo va mal, debemos recordar a Jesús, y debemos reflexionar sobre la verdad de que a veces los tiempos difíciles vienen como resultado del amor de Dios por nosotros. Lo que pensamos que es mejor para nosotros puede ser completamente opuesto a lo que Dios sabe que es mejor para nosotros. Pero pase lo que pase en esta vida, si hemos nacido de nuevo como hijos de Dios, Dios siempre estará con nosotros.
